One of the problems with the graphite Base Station
is faulty capacitors. Some feel that the root
problem causing the capacitors to blow was for
other reasons, such as heat within the case or
a faulty power regulator. Regardless, the malfunction
affects the capacitors.
The problems also affect
base stations sold under the Lucent, Agere,
Proxim, Orinoco, and HP model names, such as
AP-500, RG1000, RG1100, and HP Small Business
Access Point. There are probably other model
numbers affected as well.
For the most part, Apple
has refused to replace the limited-life capacitors,
or the ABS. However, some people have successfully
petitioned Apple and had their ABS replaced.
By all means, call Apple and try to get them
to replace your ABS before you send it to us
for repair. We replace the original two capacitors
on the motherboard with two Panasonic capacitors
that are rated to withstand higher temperatures
and purported to have a longer life in the ABS.
Also, when your station is in for repair we
load updated firmware if needed.
We are not tied to Apple,
Inc. in any way, and the repair that we perform
on your ABS will most likely void your warranty,
which could be out of date anyway.
We started out repairing
ABS for friends and then decided to offer our
services to the public. We have over ten years
experience with the Macintosh format and other
PCs.
The Symptoms:
The lights (if any) are all red or blink in
the following order:
- Left Red/All Three
Amber/All Off; or
- One Amber/ One
Red/ Three Amber/ Three Green/ All Off;or
- Sometimes it will
even be totally dead (No Lights).

There could be other variations in the order
that lights come on or blink, but usually the
lights are either all off or all red. The ABS
may also make a humming noise. Other times the
Base Station cannot be found on the network
or will just not power up.
If you observe
the above symptoms, your base station may have
blown capacitors.
We can fix stations
that have other problems too. We have LAN cards,
mother boards, and other supplies that are needed
to repair the ABS.
Recently,
we have repaired stations with FLASHROM problems.
These stations had working power supplies, but
would not connect to the network correctly or
reset themselves. So, if you suspect other problems
besides the power supply, we can probably repair
that too.
If our repair does not
fix the ABS before it leaves us, we will refund
your service payment. You only pay shipping.
Our capacitor
repair has a one year warranty. If the capacitors
fail within a year, we will replace them for
free. On our information page, you can learn
about Base Station Repair.com, the repair process,
how to make payment, and other valuable information.
Additional parts may be needed to repair some
stations.#
We will have your
station repaired within 24 hours. We then mail
the station back to you with shipping and insurance
included.
We offer antenna
installation for a very reasonable price. Please
read our antenna page. Also, if you have your
own pigtail or antenna, we will add that to your
base station while it is in for service for $10.
Email us for details. Stations should be mailed
